- 1). Check the display on the front of the fume hood to ensure it is operating properly. If the hood does not have a display, there will be a small piece of tissue paper taped to the window or sash to indicate air flow. Locate the emergency button and ensure the hood is operating in normal mode.
- 2). Open the sash and remove any objects obstructing the fume hood's air ducts. These ducts, or baffles, are usually located at the back of the hood at both the top and the bottom.
- 3). Place all the reactants, materials and glassware at least 6 inches inside the fume hood. Otherwise, the hood may not be able to prevent vapors from escaping.
- 4). Place especially bulky objects on the shelves inside the hood. Otherwise, they may block the baffles. If there are no shelves, place them on blocks or rubber stoppers to elevate them slightly.
- 5). Lower the sash so the opening is roughly 18 inches high and conduct your experiment.
