- 1). Sweep out the room using the broom and dustpan. Make sure all dirt and dust is off the concrete surface, as you want a clean area to work with.
- 2). Mix the hot water and floor cleaner in the mop bucket. Then mop the entire floor to clean up any leftover dust in the area.
- 3). Measure the room using the tape measure and an assistant to find the center point of the space. You want to measure the center from both sides.
- 4). Mark off a straight line, using the tape measure to form three marks. To do this correctly, hold the tape measure at one end of the room and measure to the center point of the room. For example, if you have a 20-foot-deep garage, you'll want to put a mark at 10 feet. Then move down the wall a bit and measure back 10 feet again and one last time on another point of the wall. This will ensure that you have three reference points for your line. Pull a chalk line across these marks, as three marks make a straight line.
- 5). Stretch the chalk line across the room with the help of your assistant. Make sure the line goes over the three points you just measured. This is going to be used as a reference point for your tiles, so make sure it's perpendicular to the wall.
- 6). Snap the chalk line to score the concrete and give you a perfect mark on the floor.
- 7). Repeat steps 4 and 5 on the other side of the room. You're trying to make a mark perpendicular to the line you just made, so make sure they are 90 degrees from each other using the square.
- 8). Peel the backing off your first tile; it doesn't matter which color it is. Carefully stick the corner of the tile down in the corner where the two chalk lines meet. This is going to determine the layout of your entire room, so make sure it's placed correctly. Once it's set, firmly press it in place.
- 9). Peel the backing off the next tile, and make sure it's the opposite color of what you stuck down first. Align it by placing it up at a 90-degree angle to the previous tile, making sure it lines up perfectly in the corners. Then slowly lay down the tile, pressing it firmly into place.
- 10
Cut any tiles that need to be trimmed to line up with the wall by marking it using the permanent marker or the pencil, then holding the square on the tile and cutting it using the utility knife. - 11
Repeat the process in steps 9 and 10, working your way across the row, alternating tiles as you go. Make sure that this first row is perfect, because it sets the tone for everything else. Make sure every tile aligns with the chalk line; that way you know it all fits correctly. - 12
Repeat the process for the next row, but alternate the colors again. Make sure no white tile aligns with another white tile, and the same with black. - 13
Repeat the process until the room is completely filled.
