- 1). Insert a dull knife, edge down, in a Tormek straight edge jig. Fasten the knife in the jig by turning the knobs on top.
- 2). Mount the Tormek tool support bar into the two holes on top of the machine.
- 3). Slip the straight edge jig onto the tool support bar. Set the "angle master" protractor to 20 degrees.
- 4). Set the protractor on the grinding wheel so that one end rests on the knife blade. Notice the gap between the bottom of the protractor and the grinding wheel.
- 5). Raise or lower the tool support by turning the tool support bar adjustment wheel until the gap between the blade and the wheel disappears. When the gap disappears, the grinding angle is set at 20 degrees. Turn on the sharpening machine and slowly move the knife blade back and forth across the grinding wheel.
- 6). Turn off the machine when you are satisfied with the results. Remove the straight edge jig and the knife from the tool support bar.
- 7). Remove the tool support bar from the vertical holes on top of machine. Insert the tool support bar into the horizontal holes on front of the Tormek.
- 8). Slide the jig and the knife onto the tool support bar. Reset the wheel diameter setting on the "angle master" protractor to 220 mm, which is the diameter of the smaller, leather-honing wheel.
- 9). Set one end of the protractor on the honing wheel and the other on the knife blade. Adjust the tool support bar by turning the adjustment wheel until the blade meets the wheel at a 20-degree angle.
- 10
Apply honing compound to the honing wheel. Turn on the Tormek and strop the knife blade on the leather wheel by slowly moving the knife blade back and forth across it. - 11
Remove the jig and the knife. Remove the knife from the jig. - 12
Strop both sides of the blade on the honing wheel by feel, using your hands, for a few seconds. Turn off the Tormek.
