How to Reinstall Ink in the Canon MP160

    • 1). Press the "Power" button, located on the right side of the printer's control panel. Grip the edges of the control panel and lift the control panel up to open the scanner unit. Locate the scanner support attached to the right side of the scanner unit. Insert the bottom end of the support into the notches on the right side of the printer's interior.

    • 2). Find the print carriage, located near the left side of the printer's interior. Push down on the tops of the installed ink tanks until they disengage from the print carriage. Remove the ink tanks from the print carriage and set them aside.

    • 3). Remove the protective tape from the underside of the black ink cartridge. Insert the black ink cartridge into the left slot on the print carriage at a slight upward angle. Push the front edge of the cartridge up until it clicks into place. Install the color ink cartridge in the other slot in a similar manner.

    • 4). Grip the control panel and lift the scanner unit up until the scanner support comes free. Fold the support up and lower the scanner unit back to its original position.

    • 5). Press the "Maintenance" button, located near the left edge of the printer's control panel. Keep pressing the button until the status message "<P>" appears in the display. Press the button on the right of the display and wait for the printer to generate a test printout.

    • 6). Examine the columns of patterns on the printout. Select the columns with the most solid set of patterns and use a pencil to fill in the corresponding circles on the printout. Lift the scanner cover and place the printout face down on the scanner glass. The upper left corner of the paper should be even with the alignment mark. Lower the scanner cover.

    • 7). Press the "Maintenance" button repeatedly until "<U>" appears in the display. Press the button to the right of the display and wait for the printer to align the cartridges. Lift the scanner cover and remove the printout. Lower the scanner cover.
