- 1). Prepare the area where you plan to fingerpaint. A flat surface, such as a table top or a floor is ideal. Remove all items from the surface and cover it with newspaper to protect the area from the paint.
- 2). Place the paper you wish to fingerpaint on on top of the newspaper. Choose from a variety of paper types, including artist paper, construction paper, poster board and card stock.
- 3). Fill individual bowls with finger paint. Place the bowls in an easy-to-reach location. Take care not to place the bowls near the edge of a table to avoid potential spills.
- 4). Provide children with smocks to wear to protect their clothing. If children are wearing long sleeves, instruct them to push their sleeves up.
- 5). Encourage children to dip their fingers in the bowls of paint.
- 6). Instruct children to spread their paint-covered fingers over the surface of the paper. Allow them to create any shape, pattern or picture they would like or you can prompt them to create a specific image. For example, if you want to practice letter writing, ask children to write a specific letter with the paint.
