- 1). Decide on a reasonable price range for your new TV. Some retailers may offer payment plans, so don't get in over your head. This will keep you on track and eliminate some choices. Your options begin under $500 for an HDTV measuring around 32 inches diagonally. A 60 inch HDTV will cost around $2000, and plenty of choices exist in between. Models with new technological advancements may cost thousands more, but may not provide noticeable benefits.
- 2). Decide where you will put your new TV and where you will watch it from. This should help give you a better idea of what size HDTV is best for you. You want your TV to fit comfortably within your range of sight, so a 50 inch screen placed 6 feet from your couch would be undesirable, as would a 20 inch screen placed 20 feet from your couch.
- 3). Consider what you will be using your HDTV for and how high a resolution you want. An HDTV with higher resolution will give you a sharper picture, but only if you have high-definition media such as HD television channels, Blu-ray discs or high-end video games. Also consider the refresh rate, which is how quickly the TV refreshes the image on screen. A higher refresh rate will give you a clearer picture.
- 4). Choose your preference of LCD or plasma-screen HDTVs. An LCD screen can give you a higher resolution, and is less prone to being damaged by a stationary image left on screen. However, LCDs cost more than plasma screens, and the high resolution doesn't benefit everyone.
- 5). Look at the TVs that meet your criteria and select the finalist that gives you the best value for what you expect out of your TV.
