- 1). Switch on the VHF portable radio. This is a small switch on the side of the device. When the radio is on, you may see a small light, typically green or red.
- 2). Adjust the volume of the portable VHF radio through the volume knob, most often found on the top of the device.
- 3). Change the radio frequency. Some portable VHF radios do not have a display, so you need to change the channel of the radio using the channel knob. If your portable VHF radio does have a display you can view the frequency changing as you change the channel. You might also be able to punch in the number of the frequency you need via number keys, similar to a touch-tone phone.
- 4). Talk to the individual on the other line by holding down the "Talk" button and talking into the microphone on the bottom of the device. Release the button when you have finished talking.
- 5). Listen to the device while the other person talks. If you press and hold the "Talk" button while the other person on the other side is talking, it is going to cut him off and you will not be able to hear what he said. Make sure the other person has finished speaking before pressing and holding "Talk."
