- Before existing as a Sony brand, WEGA was a pioneering German electronics manufacturer that began operations in 1923. In 1975 the company was bought by Sony, but televisions and other electronics were still made under the WEGA name in Europe until 1990, when Sony shut down the brand completely.
- Sony resurrected the WEGA name in 1998 with the first WEGA-branded Sony televisions. The first flat-screen CRT displays available, these TVs were known for their clearer picture and higher contrast levels than traditional curved-surface displays. Later WEGA-branded sets were LCD HDTVs, with the CRT versions being phased out as LCD displays became more popular.
- WEGA no longer exists as an independent company or as a brand at Sony. As of November 2010, BRAVIA is the name of Sony's HDTV line, replacing the WEGA line that existed since 1998.
