How to Use a Garmin Handheld GPS 400C

    Turn On/Off

    • 1). Press the "Power" key in the top right corner of the Garmin 400C to turn the GPS unit on.

    • 2). Press "Select" on the right side of the GPS when the start-up warning appears.

    • 3). Press the "Power" key and hold it for approximately three seconds to turn the GPS unit off.

    Set Destination

    • 1). Press the "Home" button on the right side of the Garmin 400C to access the "Home" screen.

    • 2). Select "Where to" on the "Home" screen using the "Rocker" button and choose "Search by name." The "Rocker" button is the round button with four arrows on it.

    • 3). Enter the name of the destination by selecting the letters using the "Rocker" button on the right side of the Garmin 400C.

    • 4). Press "Select" on the right side of the unit to view the 50 closest destinations that match the search that you entered.

    • 5). Select the location with the "Rocker" button and press "Select" again.

    View Compass and Numbers

    • 1). Press the "Home" button on the right side of the Garmin 400C to access the "Home" screen.

    • 2). Select "Information" using the "Rocker" button then select "Dashboard."

    • 3). Select "Compass" to view the compass on the screen of the Garmin 400C. Alternatively, select "Numbers" to view numerical data about your current location. Numerical data includes things like depth of the water, your latitudinal and longitudinal location and speed at which you're traveling. Note that you can customize the "Numbers" to include other information as well.

    View Perspective 3D Chart

    • 1). Press the "Home" button on the right side of the Garmin 400C to access the "Home" screen.

    • 2). Select "Charts" using the "Rocker" button.

    • 3). Select "Perspective 3D" to access the "Perspective 3D" chart. This map shows views from both behind the boat and above the boat and according to the Garmin 400C User Manual: "is helpful when navigating tricky shoals, reefs, bridges, or channels, and is beneficial when trying to identify entry routes and exit routes in unfamiliar harbors or anchorages."

    • 4). Press the "+" or "-" range buttons on the right side of the Garmin 400C to zoom in or out on the map.

    • 5). Switch back to "Navigation" chart by entering the "Home" screen, selecting "Charts" then selecting "Navigation Chart."

    Access Sonar

    • 1). Press the "Home" button on the right side of the Garmin 400C to access the "Home" screen.

    • 2). Select "Sonar" using the "Rocker" button.

    • 3). Select "Full Screen" to change the screen to "Sonar" view. Information such as depth, temperature and speed appear in the upper left side of the screen.
