- 1). Wash, dry and press the fabric according to the care instructions.
- 2). Cut four 18-by-18-inch squares from the fabric for dinner-sized napkins. Cut 9-by-9-inch squares for cocktail-sized napkins.
- 3). Lay the fabric right side down. Fold ¼ inch over along each of the four sides, working in a clockwise direction, pressing these folds in place with the iron.
- 4). Lay the fabric right side down. Fold ½ inch over along each of the four sides, pressing in place with the iron. Unfold the pressed folds. In each corner of the napkin, you will see what looks like two diamond shapes as a result of the folds in the fabric. Cut straight across each corner where the two diamonds meet.
- 5). Fold the pressed hems back in place, and pin to secure them.
- 6). Place the napkin under the threaded sewing machine's needle with the edge of the hem right next to the needle. Stitch around the napkin carefully, turning the napkin 90 degrees at each mitered corner. In order to prevent the thread from unraveling, when you start stitching, make three forward stitches, three reverse stitches and then stitch forward along the hem (backstitching). At the end of the stitching, repeat this backstitching to secure. Clip any loose threads.
- 7). Repeat this process for each napkin. Press all napkins once more, if desired.
