Glass Replacement Tools

    Cutters

    • An oval circle cutter cuts ovals of different sizes while combination strip cutters and circle cutters cut equal strips or perfect circles. A T-cutter runs along straight glass edges and often has a large capacity oil reservoir. Depending on the size of a piece of glass, there are different types of wheels for hand glass cutters. The thicker and softer the glass, the larger the wheel angle you need. Laser engraving and cutting machines are powerful tools for replacing or installing glass with a precision engraved piece.

    Suction Lifters

    • Suction lifters usually have two pliable rubber cups that create suction. The lifters are used to move non-porous materials such as glass. It is important to check the maximum lifting weight. For larger pieces of glass, use triple or quad suction lifters. There are hand suction lifters and lifters with an air pump built in to create more powerful suction.

    Pliers

    • Glass breaking pliers are necessary for holding the glass and breaking it off at the cut line. Pliers can be also used for holding mirrors because they will not damage or scratch the surface. Jaws do not meet in front of a pivot to ensure that the glass can be gripped up to the cut line. Double-wheel glass pliers remove the sharp edge of glass after cutting. Glass clamps are used for trimming the edges of the glass. Every clamp is adjustable so it provides wider application on different shapes and sizes.

    Scrapers

    • The glass may often appear smooth but scrapers are designed to remove small paint spots, over-spray, stickers, tape, bird droppings or other grime. Follow the manufacturer's instructions as not all pieces of glass are suitable for scraper use. Test a scraper on a hidden area and never use the scraper on dry glass.

    Other Tools

    • Other things you need for quick replacement of the glass are rulers, protective glasses, chisels, hand cleaners and work gloves. Heat guns remove the paint but they should not be used around highly flammable materials. If you are replacing glass from a window, you will need putty to insulate the spots between the glass and the window frame. To make sure the glass holds in place, you need glaziers that are placed beneath the putty.
