- 1). Insert your Windows XP setup disc into your computer's disc drive and turn your computer off. Turn the computer back on and, as it is booting, press the space bar repeatedly until the message "Press any key to boot from CD" appears. At that point, press any key on the keyboard.
- 2). Follow the onscreen instructions until you are brought to a screen labeled "Setup." Press the "R" button to launch the repair console.
- 3). Type in your administrator password when requested (it will ask for the admin password immediately upon booting into the recovery console). If you have no admin password, press "Enter."
- 4). Wait for Windows setup to give you a command prompt, which will look like a black screen with a blinking dash. When the command prompt appears, type in "FIXMBR".
- 5). Press "Y" and then "Enter" when it asks if you are sure you want to repair the master boot record. When Windows finishes repairing the MBR (which shouldn't take more than a minute or two), it will display the blinking dash again. Type in "Exit" and it will restart your computer. You have now repaired your MBR.
