- 1). Measure the width and height of the wall where you want to construct the deep windows. Transfer the measurements to 1/4-inch graph paper. Note the height and width of each window and how far off the floor the window is. Pencil in your existing windows.
- 2). Draw bookcases or cabinets over the wall area. You could create a false wall several inches thick but this will not add value to your home. If you install built-in bookcases or cabinets, your renovation will add value and you will get your deeper windows as well. Look at standard bookcase and cabinet sizes available in your area and use these as the base for your built-in wall.
- 3). Sketch your final version of the built-ins. Purchase the necessary bookcases and cabinets. Remove your existing baseboard, window trim and sills. Attach the bookcases and cabinets to the wall so that they line up with the inside of your window casings.
- 4). Add shelves or cabinets above and below the window. The bottom of the shelf above should be aligned with the top of the window casing. The top of the lower cabinet or shelf should be below the new window sill. Use a unifying trim across all of the cabinets and shelves to tie them together. Paint everything to match.
- 5). Attach new window sills in marble or stone. They should be well-supported by the cabinets and construction adhesive. This will allow you to place flower pots on the ledges without worry.
