- 1). Open the Start menu, select "All Programs," then "Windows Update."
- 2). Select "Express (Recommended)." Click "Install Updates." Depending on when you last updated your Windows operating system, there may be a number of updates available. Ultimately, you want to install Service Pack 3, but before that becomes available you will have to install Service Packs 1 and 2 -- so you may have to repeat steps 1 and 2 a few times.
- 3). Click "Finish" to install the updates and restart the computer. Once the Service Packs have been installed and updated, you should now be able to recognize the entire hard drive space, not limited to 131GB.
- 4). Open the Start menu, select "Run." Type "compmgmt.msc" and click "OK" to open the Computer Management utility.
- 5). Select "Storage," then "Disk Management." Within Disk Management, you will now be able to see the entire hard drive space. Disk Management gives you the options of formatting, erasing and partitioning the extra space -- among other options.
