- 1). Prepare the mold or frame you will use to hold up your papier mache as it dries. For molds such as a bowl, from which you will remove the papier mache afterwards, cover the exterior with a thin coat of vaseline so you can lift the papier mache off easily once it's dry. For frames (such as those made from cardboard boxes), which will be completely covered and remain inside the dried papier mache, tape the parts of the frame together with masking tape.
- 2). Rip old newspapers into strips. Dip strips into PVA glue and smooth onto the surface of the frame or mold. Use a brush to secure in place and squeeze out any airbubbles or wrinkles as you go. Repeat until you have build up your papier mache shape with three or four layers of paper. Leave to dry over night.
- 3). Apply more strips of glue soaked paper to your shape and build up another three or four layers. Leave to dry overnight.
- 4). Gently wiggle the dried papier mache shape to release it from the mold (if using a mold rather than a frame).
- 5). Paint your papier mache object with craft paints. Leave to dry and varnish with a final coat of PVA glue.
