- 1). Purchase stain that matches the color of your hardwood floors. Take a sample of the floor with you to a home improvement store. If you do not have a sample, take a picture of the flooring to assist in color matching. If you cannot find an exact match, select a stain that is slightly darker.
- 2). Apply wood putty to the saw hole with a plastic putty knife. Make sure you pack the putty into the hole so that it completely fills the gap. Allow the putty to dry completely.
- 3). Sand the repair by hand with fine-grit sandpaper. Make sure the repaired area is smooth and the same level as the rest of the flooring. Try to sand as little of the surrounding flooring as possible.
- 4). Wipe away the sanding dust with a microfiber cloth.
- 5). Touch up the wood putty with the matching stain. You may have to apply several coats before the repaired area blends with the rest of the flooring. Allow each coat to dry completely between application.
