- 1). First, you should get a size measurement of your countertop where your new gas cooktop will be installed, and your old cooktop dimensions as well. To give you a rough size estimate in the U.S., the standard cooktop lengths are 30" and 36", height and depth (width) varies depending on the model, but generally around 20" for depth, and about 6" in height.
- 2). Gas cooktops come in many designs, finishes, and colors. Aluminum, stainless steel, glass and enemal are popular finishes today. See what and how you like the most on the finishing looks and feel/touch.

Cooktop with 3 gas burners
How many burners do you need? Gas cooktop burners normally come in numbers from 1 to 8. And again, you'll have to put your countertop size into consideration where the new cooktop will be installed. - 4
High output burner
Look for a high output gas rate in BTU (British Thermal Unit), somewhere from 10,000btu to 12,000btu should be sufficient for serious cooks. But of course, the higher burn rate the better, if you can find and buy one with a rate higher than suggested. - 5
Specialized wok burner
If you love Asian cooking, there are gas cooktops that come with a custom wok burner, so don't forget to look for that feature. Some have a barbecue grill, if you love grilling that's another option to look for. - 6

Many cooktops have built-in exhaust fan(s). If your range hood is not work efficient, or you don't even have an exhaust cooking fan in the first place, why not go for a combo. However, for your new cooktop that comes with an exhaust fan, you'd need a vent to the outside if your kitchen didn't have one. - 7). Take your kitchen design and decoration into consideration. See if the gas cooktop model you want fits your kitchen's look along with the colors, design (shape) and material of other kitchen appliances you have.
- 8). Research online which brands, models and features fit your needs and budget. Then go to a physical store to look closely and test the real thing. After your visit you can decide whether to buy it on the spot, or if you can get a better price purchasing online.
