- 1). Push the power cord firmly into the outlet to be sure it is plugged in.
- 2). Insert the plugs on all audio cables firmly into the correct jacks. Two loose cables from the CD player to the receiver may shut off audio from the CD player, just as a disconnected cable on the tape deck will make it impossible to hear cassettes. The white audio cable should connect to the left audio channel. Red connects to the right.
- 3). Tighten all speaker wires at the terminal connections on the back of the receiver and the speakers. A loose wire may still transmit an audio signal, but is often accompanied by static.
- 4). Dial the source selector knob on the receiver to the desired component to be sure it is set to the desired audio source. A receiver set for CD playback cannot play the source signal from a turntable, MP3 player or tape deck, for example.
- 5). Adjust the balance and fade controls on the receiver if sound comes from some speakers but not all speakers connected to the system. If the balance knob is turned all the way to the left, for instance, no sound will come from the right channel speakers.
- 6). Press the surge protector reset button on the back of the receiver and the speakers, if the components are equipped with surge protection. A power surge will trip the circuit breaker and shut down the system. Pressing the button to the lock position will restore power.
