- 1). Buy a webcam. Cams that are especially good for home security include the Panasonic BL-C131A and Meccano's Spykee Wi-Fi Spy Robot. These can pan and tilt, and can work without being connected to a computer. As of December 2010, these cameras cost $200 to $300.
- 2). Set up your webcam in the area you wish to watch. If you have a webcam that needs to be connected to a computer, you will be limited by the length of the USB cable. If it is too short, get a USB cable extender.
- 3). Select a surveillance software program that will allow you to set up your webcam as a motion detector and stream the video to the Internet. These programs include GoToCamera, YawCam and Yoics (see Resources). All are free as of December 2010.
- 4). Download and install the program you have chosen. Once the program is installed, launch and configure it. You will need to create name for your web camera (such as "Living Room"), and when you are asked if you wish to set up the motion detector, click the check box. Enter an email address and a cell phone number where you can receive text messages. Whenever someone enters the room, the camera will start recording. You will be notified via text message or email.
- 5). Go to the site where you registered, using a PC, cell phone or PDA, and log in. Your video feed will appear and you will be able to see whatever your camera is seeing.
