- 1). Take the appropriate measurements of the doll. Measure around the doll's torso just under her arms; call this measurement A. Measure around her waist; this is measurement B. Measurement C is the width or circumference of her hips. Measure the length from her underarms to her waist for D, and from her waist to the desired length of the dress for E.
- 2). Crochet the bodice of the dress. Make a starting chain that is the same length as measurement A, and make one single crochet stitch in every chain across.
- 3). For a doll whose measurements for A and B are the same, single crochet back and forth in rows until you reach a height that matches measurement D. For a doll whose measurement B is smaller than A, work evenly crocheted rows for half the length of D, and then decrease on the ends of every row for the second half of that length. To decrease, single crochet two together for the first and last stitches of the row.
- 4). Crochet the skirt of the dress. For the next row, single crochet in every stitch across and then join with a slip stitch; you will work in rounds from here on out.
- 5). For a doll with a straight body (in other words, measurements A, B and C are relatively equal), increase one round by making one single crochet in the first stitch, followed by two in the next, and repeat this pattern around. Then make even, single crochet stitch rounds until your skirt reaches the desired length. For a doll with wider hips, add another increase round or two before making your evenly crocheted rounds.
- 6). Fasten off at the skirt and go back to the top of the dress. Where the split happens in the back of the top, attach your yarn with a slip stitch on one side, chain five, and join with a slip stitch where you started. This will make a button loop; repeat this two or three more times, depending on the size of the doll. Sew buttons on the opposite side of the top to match up with the button loops.
- 7). Add straps to the dress. For a simple option, attach your yarn with a slip stitch on the front of the dress in the center. Chain several stitches until the length of the chain is long enough to wrap all the way around the doll's neck with a little extra. Repeat this step again and use these two chain lengths to serve as halter ties for the doll's dress.
