Verizon iPads
You can purchase Verizon-compatible iPads from Verizon stores, directly from Apple, and from Apple authorized retailers. Only second-generation iPads come in Verizon-compatible models; original iPads only come in Wi-Fi Only and Wi-Fi + 3G for AT&T versions. The reason the iPads are not all compatible is that Wi-Fi Only models do not have any of the hardware or software needed to connect to any cellular data network, and AT&T models use a different type of hardware and software due to different network technology. Verizon iPads use technology called EVDO for its mobile broadband connections, which is only compatible with other EVDO networks. AT&T uses HSPDA technology for its iPads and data networks, and the two are not cross-compatible.
Setting Up
You can set up your Verizon mobile account directly on the iPad if you have a Verizon model. Launch the Settings app and touch the "Cellular data" item in the list on the left side of the screen. Tap "View account" and the screen will walk you through the setup process, including providing you with the current account options available. You will need a credit card to set up the service account, but in most cases you do not need a Wi-Fi connection for setup purposes, as Verizon will allow you to access the signup page over the cellular data network. You do need to be within a Verizon coverage zone for this to work; otherwise, you will need a Wi-Fi connection and your account setup may not be complete until you can access the Verizon network. The iPad will notify you when the setup is complete, generally a few minutes after signup.
Alternative Verizon Access
If you have an AT&T or Wi-Fi Only iPad, you can still use it on the Verizon network if you have another Verizon mobile device that can create a Wi-Fi hotspot. For example, Verizon sells mobile hotspot devices, and many Android phone models offered through Verizon have a mobile 3G hotspot app that lets you turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot. You will need an existing account with Verizon for your phone, and the Wi-Fi hotspot generally costs a monthly fee in addition to your regular cell phone and data service. Using this method can wear down your phone battery quickly and is subject to data limitations, so consider how much you plan to use the Verizon network when choosing this method for iPad connectivity.
Connection Quality
Your iPad's Internet connection quality over Verizon's network depends on your signal strength. This varies widely by geographic location. Your surroundings also affect your signal, as structures like buildings or mountains may block signals in an area that should be covered. Check Verizon's website for the coverage map to see if the areas where you plan to use your iPad get a strong 3G data signal. This is different from the basic phone coverage area, but Verizon lets you choose which coverage to view on the map. If the coverage in your usage area is not strong, consider a different method of iPad connectivity.
