- 1). Determine if the crack is normal or abnormal. Normal cracks don't need to be repaired since they usually disappear in the summer months as a result of the wood absorbing moisture and expanding. Abnormal cracks, on the other hand, are still visible after the wood has expanded, and might need to be repaired over time.
- 2). Clean out the crack. Depending on how old the crack is, there will likely be a lot of dirt and dust packed into it. Scrape out the sides of the crack using a small knife, and then vacuum away any debris.
- 3). Fill in the crack. Using the small knife, apply the wood putty to the crack and fill in the gap. You can apply extra putty at first and then use the knife to smooth out the surface.
- 4). Allow the wood putty to dry. This may take a day or two, depending on the size of the crack and how much putty was used.
- 5). Finish smoothing out the filled crack. Sand the dried wood putty to further smooth out the surface where the crack once was. This will help the repaired area to look more natural, and blend in with the rest of the floor.
