Do-it-Yourself Laminate Countertop

    • 1). Disconnect the water lines from the sink and remove the adhesive seal between the sink and the countertop by pressing a putty knife between the two. Loosen the drain pipe at the trap with a pipe wrench and pull the sink off the counter. If you are installing laminate onto a new countertop, skip this step.

    • 2). Cut laminate strips for the edge trim of the countertop slightly wider than needed. For example, if the counter is 2 inches thick, cut the trim 2 1/5 inches wide. Use a utility knife to cut the trim.

    • 3). Apply laminate adhesive to the back of the laminate trim and then apply a coat of adhesive to the edge of the countertop. Wait until the adhesive is dry to the touch. The adhesive packaging will give you suggested time frames based on the temperature and humidity in your home.

    • 4). Place the strip on the edge of the countertop and roll it with a laminate roller to ensure all of the adhesive makes contact.

    • 5). Place a laminate trimmer on the edge of the countertop and trim the top and bottom edges of the laminate flush with the countertop. A laminate trimmer is a small router.

    • 6). Cut the top piece of laminate for the countertop. If the countertop is still attached to the counters, butt the piece of laminate up against the wall and cut the piece so you have a small lip coming off the front of the countertop. If the countertop is not attached to the counters, cut the laminate top slightly larger in all directions.

    • 7). Apply adhesive to the back of the laminate and to the top of the countertop and allow the adhesive to dry to the touch.

    • 8). Place wooden dowel rods evenly spaced across the countertop and then set the laminate on top of it. Pull out the center rod and press down on the laminate. Pull down on the second rod and then press down on the laminate. Repeat this until you remove all of the rods. Roll across the surface of the countertop with a laminate roller to ensure the laminate is flat.

    • 9). Locate the cutout area for the sink.

    • 10

Cut out the excess laminate over the hole with a portable electric saw.

    • 11

Trim the edges of the countertop and the inside edges of the sink cutout with the laminate trimmer.
