- 1). Remove upholstery and household items outside or in a well-ventilated area. Household items that are dried well hold less smoke odor.
- 2). Remove wood smoke scents from household upholstery. Sprinkle baking soda onto upholstery so it can deodorize its fibers. Allow the baking soda to set on the upholstery for at least 60 minutes before removing.
- 3). Vacuum upholstery with a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner to eliminate odors. Vacuuming lifts smoke particles out from the upholstery that baking soda has neutralized and trapped. Limit the use of the vacuum's brushes attachment because it forces smoke particles into furniture's fibers, rather than lifting them out.
- 4). Wipe furniture--including wood furniture--down with baking soda and lukewarm water. Dip a sponge or rag into a distilled vinegar and water mixture. Wipe down furniture to eliminate wood smoke odor.
- 5). Strip household windows. Have curtains and household textile fabrics professionally dry-cleaned. According to a Louisiana State University study, use a low-phosphate powder detergent and a liquid chlorine bleach on textile materials with wood smoke odor if you must clean the textiles yourself. Wipe down blinds with a vinegar solution.
- 6). Wipe the walls down with baking soda and water. Allow walls to completely dry overnight. Apply a fresh coat of paint to walls to eliminate wood smells on walls.
- 7). Clean the air of smoke odor with an air purifier. Invest in a quality air purifier appropriate for room size; the larger the room, the more powerful the air purifier must be.
