Solutions for Cleaning Windows

Windows inevitably get dirty, both inside and out. Fingerprints, hand prints, dirt buildup or just general use of a home or other building soils windows over time. The frequency of cleanings depends on your living situations; clean the interior of your windows a few times a year and the exterior once a year. But if you live near construction zones or other dusty areas, clean your windows more often. A few different solutions are available for cleaning your windows.

    Cleaning Solutions for Purchase

    • A variety of different cleaning solutions are available for purchase from grocery or home improvement stores. Some solutions are economical while others are more focused on being environmentally friendly. Spray the solution onto the window, and wipe clean with a cloth, paper towel or piece of newspaper. Newspaper typically does not leave any streaks and saves you money since you likely already have some sitting around. You can also spray the solution onto the newspaper or cloth directly instead of the window, and wipe the window clean. Clean the window on both sides -- interior and exterior.

    Make Your Own Cleaning Solution

    • An economical and efficient option for cleaning windows is to make your own cleaning solution. You can make the solution using materials you might already have, saving money. Making your own cleaning solution is also a chemical-free option that works effectively. To make your own window cleaning solution, mix 2 tbsp. of white vinegar with 1 gallon of water. Spray the solution onto the window, or dump a little out onto a piece of newspaper, and wipe on the window until it is clean. Clean both sides of the window for best results. You can save the solution for future use; you do not need to use it all immediately.

    Hire a Professional Service

    • Another option for cleaning your windows is to hire a window cleaning service. A professional service is especially helpful if you have high or hard-to-reach windows or if you do not have the time or desire to clean windows yourself. The cleaning service will cost you more than cleaning the windows yourself, but the service is more convenient. Cost is usually based on the number of windows or size of the building as well as whether you want interior cleaning, exterior cleaning or both. Professional window cleaning services will provide all the cleaning products needed to finish the job; all you need to do is make the appointment and pay the company.
