- 1). Dress in old clothes and put on non-porous plastic gloves, protective eye wear and a mask. Depending on the severity (if there's more than 10 feet affected), you may need to consult the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at (800) 438-4318.
- 2). Open windows and doors during mold removal so that if any spores break free, they won't be trapped indoors.
- 3). Remove any porous item containing mold, if possible. These are very difficult to clean and should just be thrown away. Examples would include carpeting, upholstery, wallpaper, dry wall, ceiling tiles, insulation, clothing, paper, wood and food. Place items in a plastic bag to avoid spreading mold spores.
- 4). Spray non-porous moldy surfaces with water. This will keep the spores from releasing a toxic dust while you're working.
- 5). Prepare a bleach mix by pouring 1 cup bleach into 1 gallon of water. If you are sensitive to bleach, regular soap and water will work as well.
- 6). Scrub the affected surface with a stiff brush and bleach mix. Although this will kill the mold for the time being, it will return within the week. To keep it away, preventive measures will need to be taken.
- 1). Fix leaky pipes and poor grading. If moisture is still present, the mold will continue to come back.
- 2). Invest in a dehumidifier. Some models even contain a HEPA filter to help rid the air of mold spores. Place it in the basement, or wherever you notice a damp, musty smell, to cut down on moisture levels.
- 3). Increase ventilation. While showering, run a bathroom fan or open a window slightly. Use exhaust fans while cooking and make sure your clothes dryer vent is routed outside.
- 4). Clean up spills quickly and thoroughly. If caught before 48 hours, mold will not grow.
- 5). Monitor humidity levels. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, you should "keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity." Relative humidity can be measured with a humidity meter found at most home improvement stores.
- 6). Inspect your home regularly to catch mold outbreaks before they become widespread.
