Apartment Painting Ideas

    Single Strong Colors

    • Color wheel.

Painting each room with single strong colors is a good way to create a unique and unusual feel to your apartment. If rooms are painted using different strong colors, it is important to make sure that the colors in rooms that have a visual connection to be complimentary. For example, painting a living room a strong dark red would work with a visually connected dining room that is a strong dark orange. If the kitchen is visible from the dining room, but not from the living room, it could be painted a darker yellow. Colors that are adjacent on a color wheel are complimentary.
One thing to be aware of is that painting a wall a dark or strong color will require multiple coats to cover the color when you return the walls to their original state.

Use Different Intensities on Different Walls

    • Paint one wall with a strong color. Paint the other walls with the same color that has been mixed with white to lighten the overall effect of the pigment. Painting a large wall that will be used to display photographs, art, or other decorations while painting the smaller walls, columns or doors the lighter color is an especially interesting decor option.

    Sponge Painting

    • Use a sponge to dab paint in regular patterns over the existing paint. This works best with a light undercoat, but interesting effects can be achieved by painting a darker color and sponging a complimentary light color, or even white, over the top. Although commercially produced sponges are made for this purpose, tearing kitchen sponges can create interesting effects.

    Painted Wainscoting

    • If you like the effect of wainscoting, which is usually painting the lower portion of a wall while applying wallpaper to the upper and separating the two with a molding, try penciling in a straight line to separate the wall into an upper and lower portion. Paint the lower portion one color and the upper portion a complimentary color. Be sure to mask off the transition between the two colors for a strong dividing line. An interesting effect could be achieved by sponge painting the upper part of the wall for a wallpaper-like texture. The advantage in an apartment of painted wainscoting is that it can be easily painted over when returning the wall color to the original.
