- Type 416 stainless steel, sometimes referred to as chromium steel, is similar to grade 410 stainless steel, according to the website Azom. The addition of sulfur allows better machining but decreases its resistance to corrosion and its response to welding. Because of these traits, it's commonly used for products that are not assembled by welding and is utilized in situations with a low risk of corrosion.
- Type 416 stainless steel is comprised of eight different elements. The two principle elements are iron at 84 percent and chrome at 13 percent. Carbon, manganese, molybdenum, silicon, sulfur and phosphorus all make up less than 1.25 percent of the alloy.
- The material has a Rockwell Hardness of B82 and is considered of medium hardness. Stainless steel is dense with a rated weight of 7,800 kg per cubic meter. The Poisson's Ratio ranges between 0.27 and 0.30. The Poisson's Ratio measures the deformation of the material when it is stretched.
- The thermal expansion of 416 stainless steel is rated at 9,9 with a thermal conductivity of 24.9. Thermal expansion is a ration of the amount that expands when exposed to heat. The thermal conductivity is a characterization of the materials ability to transfer heat. Both these properties are used in comparison to similar metals to determine which fits the user's needs most closely.
