- 1). Learn which additional characters you will need. The English alphabet contains 26 letters, while the Spanish alphabet contains 29. However, only one of these (ñ) requires the use of a special keyboard combination. The other two (ch and ll) can be typed using standard keystrokes. In addition to the "ñ," you will also need to know how to add accent marks to each of the English vowels as well as how to type two special punctuation marks (¡ and ¿).
- 2). Find the "Alt" key on your keyboard. "Alt" is an abbreviation that stands for alternate. This key will need to be depressed in combination with other keys in order to generate the Spanish-specific characters.
- 3). Use the following keystrokes to generate Spanish characters: á=Alt+0225, é=Alt+0233, í=Alt+0237, ó=Alt+0243, ú=Alt+0250, ñ=Alt+0241, ü=Alt+0252, ¡=Alt+0161, ¿=Alt+0191. To use the guidelines, hold down the "Alt" key while typing the number series that follows. The numbers should be typed using the number pad on the right side of the keyboard. After completing the number series, release the "Alt" key and the Spanish character will automatically appear on the screen.
