- 1). Open the existing casement window. Measure across the width of the opening, from the widest points, using a tape measure. Subtract 1/2 inch from the measurement. Repeat the process for the height, subtracting half an inch. Use those adjusted measurements to calculate the size of your double-hung windows. Don't remove the existing casement windows until the new windows arrive.
- 2). Remove the trim around the interior edge of the window opening with a pry bar and hammer. Don't break the trim as you remove it.
- 3). Remove the hardware from the casement, using a screw gun. Cut between the window and the frame with your jigsaw and metal cutting blade, cutting through each screw holding it there. Remove the window.
- 4). Place the double-hung window unit into the opening, on the sill, then push the rest of window in.
- 5). Set a level next to the inside of the window unit. Push shims between the window unit and the frame until it's level and plumb.
- 6). Drive mounting screws through the holes on the sides of the window unit and into the wall frame to secure the window.
- 7). Shoot spray insulation into the edges of the unit, in the space between the casing and the surrounding wall.
- 8). Nail the trim back in place around the perimeter of the window, using your trim nailer. Run a bead of caulk around the lines where the new unit meets the trim.
