How to Activate a Cell Phone on the AT&T Network

    • 1). Allow the customer service representative to activate the phone in the AT&T store. If you are purchasing a new phone in an AT&T store, the customer service representative will likely activate the phone without having to be asked. However, if you have purchased a phone from an outside source, such as eBay or a friend, you may take the cell phone into an AT&T store to have it activated.

    • 2). Activate your cell phone online through AT&T's website. Following the step-by-step instructions will allow the user to activate a new phone from their own home or office. This would be especially beneficial if, for example, you had your phone replaced under warranty and the new one was shipped to you; the new phone does not come activated and traveling to a retailer might not be convenient.

    • 3). Call AT&T on a land-line phone. Contact the customer service representatives by dialing 1-800-331-0500. Inform the customer service representative that you have a new phone in which you would like to activate. You will need the phone handy so that you can access the serial number.

    • 4). Switch the SIM card from the old phone into the new phone, if equipped. According to Tech-FAQ, a SIM card stores the user's information, like an external hard drive, and can easily be used on other SIM card- equipped phones, immediately activating the phone in which it is placed. For this method to work, both phones have to be SIM card-equipped. Some phones that AT&T offer, such as the iPhone, do not use SIM cards.

    • 5). Activate your phone through iTunes if you are an iPhone user. The exception to every other phone AT&T offers is the iPhone. This phone cannot be activated at a retailer, through AT&T's website or on the phone; iTunes must be used. Once you have created an iTunes account and logged in, sync your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable. Further directions for activation will appear on the screen.
