- 1). Pull out or chop away any weeds to clear the shrub bed for the wood chip mulch.
- 2). Open the wood chip bag or container and stir the contents with your hands. This will help to even out chip sizes if the wood chips settled during transit. Wear protective gloves while mixing the wood chips.
- 3). Pour out the wood chips into a pile at the side of the shrub bed. Get a friend or neighbor to help you lift and tip the bag if it is heavy.
- 4). Dampen the wood chip pile by spraying it with water from a garden hose. Wood chips should be moist when laid to prevent them from leaching moisture from soil underneath.
