How do I Use a Mic in Yahoo With Windows Vista?

    Configure a Microphone in Vista

    • 1). Plug your USB microphone into a USB slot or plug your microphone into your computer's audio "line-in" jack.

    • 2). Open the "Control Panel" by clicking "Start," then highlighting and clicking "Control Panel."

    • 3). Click "Hardware and Sound" and then click "Manage Audio Devices" in the list of "Sound" options.

    • 4). Set your microphone as the default recording option by clicking the "Record" tab in "Sound" and then right-clicking on the microphone you installed in Step 1. Highlight and click on "Set as default device" in the submenu that appears. Note: if you only have one audio line-in installed to your computer, Windows Vista will automatically set it as the default device. Right-click on it to make sure that the box next to "Disable" is not checked.

    • 5). Test that the microphone works by speaking into it. If the indicator next to the microphone icon light up, the microphone is functioning properly. Click "OK" to exit.

Configure your Microphone for Yahoo Messenger

    • 1). Launch Yahoo Messenger by double-clicking its icon on your desktop.

    • 2). Click "Preferences" in the top menu bar and then highlight and click on "Calling & Audio."

    • 3). Open the "Call Setup Assistant" application window by clicking on the "Call Setup Assistant" button in the right-hand detail panel of the "Calling & Audio" window. Click "Next" to proceed to the microphone setup.

    • 4). Select your microphone by clicking on it then speak into the microphone to test that Yahoo Messenger recognizes the microphone. If Yahoo Messenger can recognize your microphone, it will display a message that reads "You've successfully configured your microphone." Click "Next" to continue setting up the audio for Yahoo Messenger.

    • 5). Select the audio output (such as speakers or a headset) you want to use by clicking on it. Adjust the volume until you can hear music. Click "Finish" to exit the setup.
