- A CCD, or Charge Coupled Device, sensor is a digital camera component that brings in the surrounding light and converts it to an image. Without the sensor, or with a major malfunction, pictures can develop with light deformities or even no picture at all.
- Between 2002 and 2004, Sony's Cyber-Shot DSC-F717 camera had problems with the CCD sensor. According to The Imaging Resource, the consensus over what caused the failure was weak computer chip packaging as well as frail wiring and electrode connections.
- Currently, no Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-F717 has this defect if manufactured after March 2004. If an older camera is found to have this malfunction, The Imaging Resource suggests speaking with Sony to arrange a repair that can possibly be under warranty.
