- 1). Connect your PC and laptop by logging each of them onto the same local area network (LAN) to provide complete access back and forth between them. With a connecting network--either wired or wireless--you can then freely copy files back and forth between the computers, updating each with the latest versions of your documents.
- 2). Connect your PC and laptop via a direct cable in situations where no network is available. Newer computers can be connected by a USB-to-USB cable, while older computers without USB ports will need to be connected via their serial ports. Choose the connecting cable that matches your PC and laptop connections on each end and connect the cable accordingly.
- 3). Install a synchronizing software of your choice on each computer or use the Windows Sync Center to establish the electronic connection between the computers. Programs such as FolderShare, BeInSync or Allway Sync--as well as Windows Sync Center--continually monitor the files and folders you identify and automatically update each connected computer with the latest versions of your documents, freeing you from having to remember which computer you were using the last time you worked on each file. Follow the software's built-in instructions when you're ready to begin the synchronizing process.
