- Audio amplifier testing involves powering the amplifier with a power supply, feeding it an audio signal and measuring the output voltage across two power resistors serving as dummy loads for the speakers. After measuring the voltage, you can determine the output power by mathematically squaring the voltage and dividing the results by the value of the resistor ((V x V)/R). This power level is then compared to the specification value to see whether the power amp is performing to specification.
- The test equipment needed to do this test include a DC power supply, a set of power resistors, a signal or tone generator and a digital volt meter. In addition, an oscilloscope is useful to view the output voltage waveform, but it's not required.
- The chief objective of each audio amplifier is to feed adequate power to speakers and produce high-quality sound for users. To this end, technicians can use audio amplifier output testing to troubleshoot and/or optimize design.
