How to Change a Taskbar

    Windows XP

    • 1). Right-click on your taskbar, then navigate to "Toolbars." Select "Quick Launch" to activate the quick launch toolbar of your taskbar.

    • 2). Right-click on the taskbar, then select "Lock the Taskbar" to uncheck the option. Click on the edge of your taskbar then move your mouse up and down to increase its height, or side to side to move it to the side of the screen.

    • 3). Right-click on an empty space on your Desktop, then select "Properties." Click on the "Appearance" tab then navigate to the "Color scheme" drop-down box. Select any of the available color schemes, then click on "OK" to save the changes. This will change the color of the taskbar.

    • 4). Right-click on your taskbar and select "Properties." In the taskbar properties menu you have the option to check or uncheck several options: lock the taskbar, auto-hide the taskbar, keep the taskbar on top of other windows, group similar taskbar buttons, and show quick launch. You can also choose to show the clock, or hide inactive icons. When you are finished, click "OK" to save the changes.

    Windows Vista

    • 1). Right-click on a blank spot on your taskbar. Then click on "Properties" at the bottom of the shortcut menu.

    • 2). Select or deselect "Lock the taskbar" option. Selecting it will prevent it from being moved or resized, while deselecting it will allow you to modify the taskbar's size and position.

    • 3). Select or deselect "Auto-hide." Having it selected will keep it hidden when unused, while having it unchecked will have the taskbar constantly revealed. When it is hidden, just move your mouse to the bottom of your screen and the taskbar will pop up.

    • 4). Select or deselect "Group similar taskbar buttons." When selected, similar open programs will be grouped in one section, while deselecting will have each open program separated on the taskbar.

    • 5). Click on "Hide inactive icons" listed under "Notification Area." This will hide any icons that are not currently in use.

    • 6). Click on the "Apply" button. Then click on "OK" to save the changes.

    Windows 7

    • 1). Right-click the taskbar. Then select "Properties."

    • 2). Check or uncheck any of the following options: lock the taskbar, auto-hide the taskbar, or use small icons. Checking each one will perform the appropriate feature, while unchecking them will deactivate them.

    • 3). Navigate to the "Taskbar location" drop-down menu. Select from the options like bottom, top, left, or right.

    • 4). Navigate to the "Toolbar buttons" drop-down menu. Choose one of the following options: always combine and hide labels, combine when taskbar is full, or never combine.

    • 5). Navigate to the "OK" button. Click it to save the changes.
