- 1). Clear the wooden shelf in which you wish to install shelf dividers. Place the measuring tape on the shelf and decide where the shelf dividers must be. Use the pencil to draw a line from the back of the shelf to the front. From that line, measure 1/2 inch and draw another line across the shelf itself. Repeat this 1/2-inch section on the shelf where the dividers must be.
- 2). Place the measuring tape on the shelf to measure its depth. In addition, place the measuring tape on the wall to determine how tall the shelving dividers can be. Write both of these measurements down.
- 3). Lay the plywood sheet on a flat surface, such as the floor or large table. Draw the shelf dividers on the plywood using the depth and height measurements from the previous step. Cut the shelf dividers using the reciprocal saw and sand the sides and edges using the sandpaper.
- 4). Locate the bottom of the shelf dividers, which is the less appealing depth side of the dividers. Draw two marks on this 1/2-inch thick side, spaced evenly apart. In addition, the marks must be in the middle of the 1/2-inch space, meaning it should be around 1/4 inch inward. Drill a hole where each of the marks are drawn using the drill and the 1/4-inch drill bit.
- 5). Insert a wooden dowel into each of the holes drilled in the shelf dividers. Place each shelf divider on the 1/2-inch drawn sections on the wooden shelf, so the dowels face downward. Line it up with the shelf, so it is evenly placed. Use the pencil to make small marks where the dowels sticking out from the dividers hit the surface of the shelf. Remove the dividers and drill small holes where the marks are on the shelf. The holes cannot go through the shelf itself. Install the shelf dividers on the shelf by pushing the dowels in the holes.
