- 1). Check the network device settings. The network device should be turned off by default until you enable it.
- 2). Configure the device to use bridged networking. The default network setting is typically NAT or Network Address Translation which is very simple, but does not give the virtual machine its own IP from the physical network containing the host machine. Bridged networking adds your computer to a physical network and will make it easier to access through the Internet.
- 3). Check the documentation for your virtual machine software. You may need to forward ports or use a special network configuration to access the virtual machine over the Internet. The host machine could also be blocking outside access with firewalls or other security settings.
- 4). Try to access your virtual machine through an outside network. A good test on Linux virtual machines, is to host a web server, or SSH, to the machine since they use known ports. You will need the IP address of the virtual machine. If you want to remote desktop to a Windows virtual machine, make sure the operating system is configured to allow remote desktop connections.
