How to Troubleshoot an HP LaserJet IIIP

    • 1). For problems when trying to print from Microsoft Outlook, check the Outlook settings. If the "Manual Feed" message occurs and the corresponding light flashes when printing from Outlook, you can change Outlook settings to fix the problem. In Outlook, click "File," then "Page Setup." Click "Define Print Styles," then select one of the print styles for the document you are trying to print. Click "Edit," then click "Paper." Click "Paper Source" and change it to something other than "Manual Feed." Click "OK." Close the dialog box, then try to print to see if the problem is fixed.

    • 2). For error messages on the printer's LCD display, check for a variety of problems. If "FC (top, bottom, both left, right)" is displayed, re-insert the old font cartridge and press Continue. If "FE Cartridge" is displayed, turn the printer off and back on to reset the message. If there is a blank LCD display, make sure there is power to the printer. Then turn the printer off for 15 minutes and switch it back on. If "MF Ready" is displayed, insert paper into the front multi-purpose tray.

    • 3). For a 50.x error message, check the power supply. If the display shows any 50.x error message, first unplug the printer for 30 minutes. After that, try a different power cord or plug the power cord directly into an outlet instead of using a surge protector. If that fails, try different electrical outlets. Finally, check the fuser to see if it is damaged. The 50.x Fuser errors are due to power shortages to the printer.

    • 4). If the printer produces a gray background when printing envelopes, open the multi-purpose tray and press the release button to open the paper path door. Move the print density bar to the right for darker printing. Close the paper path door. Print 20 pages in color to stabilize the unit, then try printing envelopes again.

    • 5). If the printer is having trouble with a Macintosh operating system connection, such as being unable to print EPS files correctly when connected by USB, make sure your program is sending data as ASCII instead of Binary. This setting can usually be checked through the application options.
