- 1). Ensure that the hemp twine you will be using has an even thickness and a smooth texture. You can also apply wax to the hemp for a glossier look.
- 2). Lay out four lengths of hemp. Grab the length that is farthest right. Fold it over the middle two strands and under the left strand. Fold the left strand under the middle two strands and over the right strand, creating a symmetrical knot. Now finish the knot by pulling the outside strands taught.
- 3). Fold the left length over the middle two strands and under the right strand. Pull the right strand under the middle two stands, then up and above the left strand. Pull the threads tight to finish the knot.
- 4). Alternate these two knots to create a broad, flat pattern. Use the same knot in succession to create a spiral pattern, or try a combination of alternate and successive knots to give your jewelry a varied look.
- 5). Add wooden beads to your hemp jewelry. Thread the bead onto the middle two strands and tie one of the knots you've learned around it. Pull the twine tight to lock the bead into place. If the holes in your beads are too small to fit onto the thread, you can sew them on or attach them with small wire loops that you attach to the middle strands. Add as few or many beads as you like.
- 6). Twist or braid the ends of the necklace together and tie them in a simple knot to complete the necklace. You could also attach metal clasps to either end, or make your hemp necklace adjustable by tying a double fisherman's bend. See the tutorial in Resources for instructions on how to tie this type of knot.
- 1). Tie down one end of a hemp thread. Keep this thread tight while tightly looping another very long length of hemp around it in a simple over-under pattern.
- 2). Thread beads onto the base strand and anchor them by wrapping the other strand around them.
- 3). Complete the loop in the same way you would a knotted necklace.
