How to Put Windows XP Professional on a Laptop With a New Motherboard

    • 1). Insert the Windows XP Professional CD into your computer's disc drive and restart the computer. Press any button on the keyboard once the "Press Any Key to boot from CD...." message appears on the screen. The message only appears for a few seconds, so pay close attention to the screen. If you miss it, restart the computer and start over.

    • 2). Press "Enter" in the "Welcome To XP Setup" screen. Read the licensing terms and press "F8" to agree to the terms. Press "Enter" to select the recommended hard drive partition to store the operating system. Press "Enter" to configure the hard drive to the required format. Windows will then copy the set-up files to the hard drive and restart the set-up.

    • 3). Click "Next" in the window that appears once the set-up is restarted. Enter your personal and company information for the computer and click the "Next" button. Type in the 25-character product key that comes with the Windows Professional Installation CD. Click "Next" to advance to the next window.

    • 4). Select an administrator name and password for the system and set the "Time and Date" settings for your region. Click "Next" in the "Network Settings" window and enter in the workgroup information for the computer if there is any. Click "Next" to restart the computer.

    • 5). Click "OK" in the monitor settings message and the "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" page will appear. Click "Next" and choose the "Help protect my PC by turning on Automatic Updates now" and click "Next."

    • 6). Follow the prompts to select the Internet connection for the computer and register your copy of Windows XP with Microsoft. Click "Finish" on the "Thank You!" page to complete the installation.
