- 1). Install a freshly charged battery into the Nikon D60 and turn on the camera. Select a shooting mode by turning the round exposure mode dial on the top right of the camera. The onboard flash will work automatically in all programs other than "M," for manual, and in the setting that turns off the flash.
- 2). Hold the camera to your eye and press the shutter release halfway down. This activates the camera's metering mode and auto-focusing system. It also will cause the onboard flash to pop up if the camera's meter determines more light is needed. Take the picture by fully pressing the shutter release, then press the "Review" button to examine the picture.
- 3). Adjust the onboard flash power output by pressing the "+/-" button located just behind the shutter release, and at the same time turn the wheel. This is the control for "Flash compensation;" you can increase or decrease the flash's power to -3 stops or +1 stop, in increments of one-third. This adjustment is a good tool when you want to fine-tune the flash's power.
- 4). Hold the camera to your eye again, take another picture with the new settings and compare it with the first picture. Adjust the flash as necessary for the desired effect.
