- The Sony A500 has two continuous shooting speeds: four frames per second and five frames per second. Sony included a 7-fps speed on the A550. Regarding the storage of images -- all in JPEG or Raw Image Format -- the A500 supports the following picture qualities, measured pixel resolutions: 2,128 by 1,192; 2128 by 1,416; 3,104 by 1,744; 3,104 by 2,072; and 4,272 by 2,848. For the A550, the range is higher: 2,288 by 1,280; 2,288 by 1,520; 3,344 by 1,872; 3,344 x 2,224; 4,592 by 2,576; and 4,592 by 3,056.
- With zoom lenses that have a focal length range of 18 to 55 millimeters lens, the Sony A500 and Sony A550 have a total of 12.9 million pixels. Their optical sensors, which measure 0.61 inches by 0.95 inches, or 15.6 by 23.5 mm, have an effective resolution of 12.3 million pixels. The Sony A500 and A550 also have a shutter speed range of 1/4000 to 30 seconds, six flash modes and 3-inch color screens with liquid-crystal display and thin-film transistor technology.
- Personal computers compatible with the Sony A500 and A550 have at least Windows Vista, Windows 2000 or XP with Service Pack 2 for Windows-based PCs and Apple Mac OS X 10.1.3 for Macintosh computers. The computer must also have a USB port to connect the camera for data transfer and battery charging, as well as a CD-ROM drive to run the installation CD. In addition to a USB port, each camera has a high definition multimedia interface for uncompressed digital audio/video transfer and expansion flash memory slots for Secure Digital and Memory Stick Pro cards.
- Each Sony A500 and Sony A550 camera has a width of 5.4 inches, or 137.16 mm; depth of 3.3 inches, or 83.82 mm; and height of 4.1 inches, or 104.13 mm. The weight is recorded as 1.3 lbs, or 589.7 grams. For power, the A500 and A550 use the Sony NP-FM500H, a 1,650-milliampere-hour rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
