- Be sure that any throw rugs you purchase or use in your home have a non-slip rubber backing or have been put down with double-sided carpet tape. This will keep the rugs from sliding around the floor. In the bathroom, use non-slip tub tape, non-slip tub decals or a rubber mat inside the tub and a rubber-backed bath mat outside of the tub. When choosing flooring for your kitchen or bathroom, do not choose highly reflective ceramic tiles--look for a tile with a little bit rougher surface. Keep paper towels on hand for quick cleanups to encourage everyone in your family, even young ones, to clean up after their spills. Use a runner rug in front of the kitchen sink and a mat under any pet feeding areas to catch spills and splashes.
- Check your garage floor to be sure that it has been textured and is not just a plain painted surface. Epoxy coatings can be applied and sand added to create a textured surface to prevent slipping when wet. Always keep plain generic kitty litter on hand, and if oil or grease spills on the floor, throw the kitty litter generously over the spill to absorb the oil and prevent slipping. Sweep up after all the oil has been absorbed. Use rubber matting around the work areas of your garage to help keep the chances of slipping lower.
- Check your outside walkways for low spots and valleys where water can collect and repair them if necessary. These areas can cause moss to grow in the summer and ice to collect in the winter, both of which can cause slips. When painting your outdoor surfaces, be sure to include a sand texture in the paint or epoxy to keep the surface non-slip. Consider adding textured tape to the front edges of each step. Always keep rock salt or a mixture of rock salt and sand in a sealed bucket by the front door in cold weather to enable easy access for icy and snowy days.
