- 1). Turn on the wireless router. Connect the "WAN" port on its back to the connection provided by your Internet service provider (ISP), using an Ethernet cable.
- 2). Connect a computer to a numbered port on the back of the Linksys wireless router, using the other Ethernet cable.
- 3). Bring up the Linksys configuration utility by launching a Web browser and navigating to the configuration Web address. This address depends on the router's model. For example, for a Linksys WRT54GS, the default address is "192.168.1.1".
- 4). Configure the basic network parameters. For example, on a WRT54GS, click "Wireless," then "Basic wireless settings." Enter a name of your choice for your wireless network; channels 6 or 11 are the best. Click "Save settings."
- 5). Configure the security parameters of the wireless network. For example, on a WRT54GS, click "Wireless," then "Wireless security." Choose "WPA2 Personal" as the "Security mode." Pick a passphrase and type it into the "WPA shared key" field. Click "Save settings." The wireless router will be configured to manage your wireless network as its access point.
