- 1). Check your computer's specs against the minimum specs listed on the Windows XP installation disc to make sure your computer can handle an XP installation. Windows Me is an old system, so the computer it is installed on is likely old as well and may not have the capacity to handle Windows XP. To check your computer's specs, click "My Computer" and then click "Properties."
- 2). Clean up your hard drive by running the "Disk Defragmenter" utility. Click "Programs," then click "Accessories," "System Tools" and "Disk Defragmenter."
- 3). Back up your important data to an external disk drive before proceeding with the upgrade.
- 4). Close all active programs and applications.
- 5). Insert the Windows XP disc and follow the on-screen instructions.
