- 1). Prepare the brick for paint by sanding it with the sandpaper. This scruffs up the surface, which allows the paint to adhere better.
- 2). Scrub the brick with the mild soapy water and a stiff scrub brush. This removes any dust and debris caused from the sanding. Allow the brick to thoroughly dry.
- 3). Vacuum the brick to remove any residual dust.
- 4). Prime the brick according to the manufacturer's instructions, with a brush or roller. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly. Reapply primer, as necessary. Allow the primer to dry.
- 5). Paint the brick with a high-quality acrylic latex paint. This allows the brick to "breathe" but not crack. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly, and apply at least one more coat. If you use your fireplace frequently, you may want to add more coats to keep the finish. Allow the paint to cure for a few weeks before using the fireplace.
