- 1). Purchase an "unlocked" phone that works with any carrier. If you're buying from an online seller, such as on eBay or Craigslist, the listing will specify that the phone is unlocked (or "jailbroken"). Buy an unlocked phone and simply remove your SIM card from your old phone and insert it into the new one to use it on Verizon. This option offers the most flexibility--if you ever decide to move on from Verizon, you can use your phone on any network.
- 2). Buy a phone Verizon sold its original user. If you're certain you'll stay with Verizon for the life of the phone, you should include the word "Verizon" in your search terms. Any phone Verizon sells can be used with any Verizon SIM card, so as long as Verizon sold it in the first place. Transfer your SIM card to the new phone to begin using it.
- 3). Get your phone directly from Verizon. While you'll have to extend your service agreement--or pay more in lieu of doing so--Verizon will take care of your phone's activation for you. This option will also allow you to purchase phone insurance, which you won't be able to do if you purchase from a third party.
- 4). Buy a locked phone and have a cell phone or computer specialist unlock it. If your phone is "tethered" to another network, such as AT&T or T-Mobile, it won't work on Verizon, so unlocking a non-Verizon phone is non-negotiable. Put your SIM card into your new phone once it's been unlocked.
