- 1). Cut the wood to 4-foot lengths, and round off the corners if your children are small. Remove any splinters or rough surfaces with sandpaper.
- 2). Prime the wood before painting the shelves. If you are building multiple shelves, paint each shelf a different color. Use wood stain if you want to color the wood and still have the natural grain show through.
- 3). Place a spirit level against the wall and run a pencil along its top. Repeat this for the other shelves. Run a stud finder against the lines and mark the center of each stud.
- 4). Place a bracket against the stud mark closest to the end of the shelf, and screw the bracket into position--use 1-5/8-inch wood screws. Repeat with the other end stud. Do the same for the other shelves.
- 5). Place the shelf on the brackets so the shelf ends are equidistant to the brackets. Connect the brackets to the shelves with 1/2-inch wood screws. Install the other shelves in the same fashion.
